Youth Ministry Courses

YMI 111 Introduction to Youth Ministry (3) Fall
This course is designed to present an overview of youth ministry. Students will develop their own youth ministry mission statement as they survey various philosophies of ministry and learn those principles necessary to establish and maintain a ministry to adolescents.

YMI 221 Cross Cultural Youth Ministry (3) Fall
Prerequisite: YMI 111 Introduction to Youth Ministry
This course is an investigation of contemporary American youth culture and the cultural dynamics that affect today's youth. Students will explore the unique needs, characteristics, and issues facing adolescents and will consider ways to equip them to live as fully devoted followers of Christ. Emphasis will be given to learning to minister to youth effectively in the ver-changing environment of 21st century life. Students will be challenged to move outside their "comfort zones."

YMI 223 Personal and Private Life of a Leader (3) Spring
Prerequisite: YMI 111 Introduction to Youth Ministry
This course is designed to explore the call and character of a leader, especially the youth leader. Emphasis will be given to integrating foundational leadership principles and addressing the problems and pitfalls of youth leaders. Students will learn to incorporate the spiritual disciplines in their daily lives.

YMI 224 Youth Ministry , Organization, and Planning (3) Spring
Prerequisite: YMI 111 Introduction to Youth Ministry
Students will study the planning and implementation of ministry strategy. Programming aspects of the large meeting, small group meeting, activities, special events, camping, and missions projects will be examined and attention given to programming for the spiritual development of youth.

YMI 394 Communicating with Today's Youth (3) Fall
Prerequisite: YMI 111 Introduction to Youth Ministry
Students will acquire the specific knowledge and skills necessary in communicating biblical and spiritual truth to youth through a variety of contemporary teaching tools and experiences in a way that is relevant to contemporary youth. Special emphasis will be placed upon the development and delivery process.

YMI 395 Counseling Today's Youth (3) Spring
Prerequisite: YMI 111 Introduction to Youth Ministry,YMI 394 Communicating with Today's Youth
Students will learn counseling principles and techniques and explore ethical and legal issues related to counseling adolescents. Special emphasis will be given to helping the "at-risk" adolescent as well as ways to guide adolescents and their families as they face such contemporary issues as divorce, sexuality, unplanned pregnancy, chemical abuse, boundaries, parental roles, single parenting, sibling relationships, respect, independence, career planning, and goal setting.

YMI 491 Youth Ministry Internship (3)
Prerequisite: YMI 111 Introduction to Youth Ministry, 15 hours of youth ministry specific course work, and permission of the department chair.
The internship provides hands-on experience in working with youth in a supervised field experience at an approved site. The student will learn how to program and develop leadership aspects of youth ministry in real life.

YMI 494 Professional Orientation to Youth Ministry (3) Spring
Prerequisite: all youth ministry courses including internship
A capstone course designed to equip the student in developing a master plan for ministry. Development of skills in the areas of personal and ministry organization including special emphasis on leadership, time management, volunteers, budgets, administation and legal issues, working with a pastoral staff and congregation, denominational issues, and identity. This course is taken in the student's last semester after completion of the internship and all other youth ministry courses. Ministry Organization and Planning (3) Spring
