TED 111 Philosophy of Education (3) Fall
A survey of philosophical issues, trends, and practices in private and public education. Metaphysics, epistemology and axiology as they pertain to teachers, students and curriculum will be studied. Students will write a personal, biblical philosophy of education. This course is a prerequisite for all education courses.
TED 222 Teacher Practicum I (1) Spring
Prerequisite: TED 111 Philosophy of Education
A field experience that is designed to provide insight into the daily activities of classrooms. Students will spend a minimum of 25 hours in a classroom under the direct supervision of a teacher and WBC faculty member. Attendance at regular seminar sessions and classroom observations in four different grade levels are also required.
TED 241 Methods of Teaching Bible I (3) Fall
Prerequisites: A PBI Bible course and a Bible or theology course.
A course designed to develop basic principles and practices in teaching Bible in grades PreKindergarten through elementary grades. Lesson plan development using behavioral objectives will be emphasized; evaluation of curricula, and practice teaching will be required. This course is a prerequisite for all methods courses.
TED 242 Methods of Teaching Bible II (3) Spring
Prerequisite: TED 241 Methods of Teaching Bible I
A course designed to prepare teachers for Bible instruction in Christian schools, grades seven through twelve. Curriculum evaluation, unit development, and practice teaching are emphasized.
TED 252/262 Reading & Language Arts (3) Spring
Prerequisite: TED 241 Methods of Teaching Bible I
A course designed to develop methods of teaching reading by exploring the impact of phonemic awareness and recent brain research on the process of language acquisition as well as questioning techniques using higher learning skills. Integrating all of the language arts into teaching reading will be practiced by preparing and teaching lesson plans.
TED 321/341 Reading Methods I (3) Fall
Prerequisites: TED 252/262 Reading and Language and passing scores on PRAXIS I.
A course designed to teach students to use a balanced program of phonics, semantics and syntactic in teaching reading. Students will develop lesson plans demonstrating this balance and the ability to integrate biblical concepts and principles.
TED 322/342 Reading Methods II (3) Spring
Prerequisites: TED 252/262 Reading and Language and passing scores on PRAXIS I.
A course designed to teach a variety of methods for teaching reading, including basal texts, language experience, children’s literature, whole language, etc. Students will demonstrate competency in selection and evaluation of materials as well as lesson planning that incorporates determining comprehension, flexible grouping, cooperative learning, and meeting the academic needs of diverse populations.
TED 325/345 Teaching Science & Social Studies (3) Fall
Prerequisites: TED 241 Methods of Teaching Bible I, a minimum of six hours of science and six hours of social studies, and passing scores on PRAXIS I.
A course designed to give the student a basic understanding of the content, materials, and skills appropriate for science and social studies instruction. Emphasis is placed on teaching by inquiry. Discovery learning is done through practical experiences, experiments, and projects. Students construct and present to the class units that incorporate methods demonstrating understanding of multicultural awareness and diversity of learning styles.
TED 332 History and Philosophy of Education (3) Spring
Prerequisite: TED 111 Philosophy of Education or CHM 211 Educational Ministry of the Church. PRAXIS I not required.
A survey of the history of education from Socrates to the present as background for an in-depth consideration of philosophy of education. Students will consider the philosophical issues that impact education and will compare the traditional and contemporary philosophies of education with biblical teaching. Teacher education students will explore implications for the teacher in public and private schools, the teaching-learning process, and goals of education. Church education students will consider the same for education in the church.
TED 421/441 Teaching Math (3) Fall
Prerequisites: TED 241 Methods of Teaching Bible I, a minimum of six hours of college math, and passing scores on PRAXIS I.
A course designed to introduce the teacher to the skills necessary to instruct young learners in mathematical concepts, computation, reasoning, and application. Students are exposed to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards. The ability to use hands-on materials and concrete methods of instruction will be demonstrated by preparing and teaching lesson plans which incorporate both.
TED 422 Teacher Practicum II (1) Fall
Prerequisites: TED 241 Methods of Teaching Bible I, TED 222 Practicum I, TED 465 Classroom Procedures and a minimum of 12 hours of methods courses.
A field experience that is designed to provide a smooth transition into the final field experience of student teaching. Students are assigned to a classroom teacher to aid in instructional and non-instructional activities. A minimum of 25 hours of classroom participation will be documented. Attendance at seminars is also required.
TED 431 Teaching Exceptional Children (3) Spring
Prerequisites: TED 111 Philosophy of Education, TED 331 Educational Psychology, and passing scores on PRAXIS I.
A general introduction to the field of exceptional children, identifying their characteristics and needs, and determining teaching strategies to aid them in the learning experience. This course is designed to help the regular classroom teacher with the referral process needed to assist children. Two different field observations are required.
TED 442 Teaching Music–Elementary (3) Fall
Prerequisites: TED 111 Philosophy of Education, MUS 321 Music Theory & Skills IV, and passing scores on PRAXIS I.
Students will study effective teaching methods for the general music, choir, and instrumental classes in the elementary classroom. They will be introduced to the Kodaly and Orff methods of teaching rhythm and melody, will be introduced to various musical instruments and resources, and will develop a comprehensive general education music curriculum for Kindergarten-6th grades. They will also study and learn how to select appropriate choral and instrumental music for the elementary music program.
TED 443 Teaching Music–Secondary (3) Fall
Prerequisites: TED 111 Philosophy of Education, MUS 321 Music Theory & Skills IV, and passing scores on PRAXIS I.
Students will study effective teaching methods for the general music, choral, and instrumental classes in the secondary school. They will discuss appropriate learning techniques for students in the middle-high school age group and will also study and learn to select appropriate music for the secondary choral and instrumental programs.
TED 451 Tests and Measurements (3) Fall
Prerequisite: MAT 231 Math for the Liberal Arts or MAT 223 Introduction to Statistics
A course designed to introduce the prospective teacher to the instruments used in assessing student achievement within the classroom. Test preparation, grading, using basic statistics, and standardized tests will be studied.
TED 461 Creative Activities–Early Childhood (3) Spring
Prerequisites: TED 111 Philosophy of Education, TED 331 Educational Psychology, and passing scores on PRAXIS I.
An introduction to the techniques and resources for art, music, play, and creative dramatics appropriate for the nursery, kindergarten, and primary school child. This course is for teachers seeking nursery–grade-3 certification. Lab participation is required.
TED 465 Classroom Procedures (3) Fall
Prerequisite: TED 241 Methods of Teaching Bible I
A course in classroom management and routine procedures. Particular attention is given to training in biblically based discipline techniques, establishing proper classroom decorum, conducting parent-teacher conferences and documenting students’ work.
TED 491 Student Teaching (12) Spring
Prerequisites: Completion of all methods courses and passing scores on PRAXIS II.
A program of supervised classroom teaching in early childhood, elementary education, or Bible education. The student teacher’s performance is monitored by a master teacher and the College supervisor. The student teacher will gradually take full responsibility of the regular classroom. The student teaching experience totals twelve weeks.
