MIS 221 History of Missions (3) Fall
Prerequisite: FST 102
A study of the history of the expansion of the church through the lens of the personalities, issues, and movements from the first century through the present.

MIS 222 Prayer & Spiritual Warfare (3) Fall
Prerequisite: FST 102
A practical inquiry into the biblical teaching on prayer with a view to equipping the student to begin now being a person of prayer. Spiritual formation in the area of prayer is the focus of this class.

MIS 232 Area Studies Seminary (3) Spring
Prerequisite: FST 102
An examination of critical geographical areas of the world with an emphasis on one region as the student learns to be a world Christian. Through this course, the student will grow to better understand God’s world and the people groups who comprise it.

MIS 322 Principles of Church Planting (3) Fall
Prerequisite: FST 102
A study of the philosophy and various aspects of planting a church either locally or cross-culturally. The student will be exposed to different approaches to church planting and the available resources in this filed.

MIS 324 Perspectives on the World Christian Movement (3) Spring
Prerequisite: FST 102
Viewing history and the world through the biblical, historical, cultural, and strategic lenses, this course provides an analysis of the development, spread and social impact of Christianity as a worldwide religious and social movement. Special attention is given to the role and impact of the church on the cultures of two-thirds of world countries and on traditionally non-Christian cultures. Through research and extensive reading, the students are equipped with the knowledge that will enable them to develop a deeper commitment to the cause of home and foreign missions.

MIS 331 Cross-Cultural Issues (3) Spring
Prerequisite: FST 102,PSY 211
An analysis of the factors of worldview, how people think, verbal/non-verbal patters, etc., that affect the reception of the Gospel. Emphasis is given to special difficulties and unusual situations that arise when the Gospel is presented cross-culturally.

MIS 332 Monotheism and Monism: Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism (3) Spring
Prerequisite: FST 102
A study of the main trenets of monistic and monotheistic religions and the worldview of those who espouse them.

MIS 334 Perspectives on the World of Islam (3)
Prerequisite: FST 102
Patterned after MIS 324, this course seeks to educate students to understand Islam and to mobilize them to reach Muslim peoples with the gospel of Christ. Readings, field trips, interactions with people from the Muslilm world, and visiting local mosques are all part of this course. A variety of lecturers facilitates the learning process. Participants will leave the class with a working knowledge of the Islamic faith and an understanding of how to reach Muslims with the Gospel.

MIS 421 Washington, D.C., is the World! (3) Summer
Prerequisite: FST 102
On site visitation and evaluation of various ethnic populations, international groups, and ministries based in the Greater Washington and Baltimore regions. This hands-on class seeks to gain exposure to the diverse multi-ethnic world that lies within minutes of the WBC campus.

MIS 422 Current Trends and Political Ideologies in Missions (3) Spring
Prerequisite: FST 102
A study and evaluation of recent missiological strategies and trends as well as the political, sociological, and ecclesiological influences.

MIS 441 Folk Religion: Animism, Tribal Religions, Occult (3) Fall
Prerequisite: FST 102
A study of the animistic and occultic worldviews, practices, and influences worldwide. The animistic and occultic world is compared and contrasted with the more material worldview of the Western world. The student will be exposed to the mindset of those who see the interconnectedness of the spiritual world and the physical world. Contextualization of the Gospel within animistic and occultic cultures is stressed.

MIS 491 Missions Internship (3)
Prerequisite: missions chair approval
A cross-cultural short term missions experience coordinated through the office of the Chair of the Missions Department to assure maximum benefit to the student’s educational experience.

MIS 493 Senior Integrative Seminar (3) Fall
Prerequisite: MIS 491 Missions Internship
The student will be expected to produce a research project in an area of interest or specialization in the final stages of the academic program. The project is designed to focus the student’s missions education in preparation for missions service. The student must have completed a minimum of 30 hours in the missions curriculum to be eligible for MIS 482. Advanced consultation and approval of the missions chair is required.
