ENG 100 Introduction to College English (3) Fall/Spring
A course designed for the student whose skills are not sufficient to begin a college-level course in English. The student will focus on mastering the rules of basic English grammar, improving vocabulary, and building paragraph writing skills. Students will progress toward writing a five-paragraph essay with the thesis clearly stated and developed. Reading skills will be honed by reading and discussing short works of literature from a variety of genres.
ENG 121 English Composition I (3) Fall/Spring
A course designed to teach the basic strategies of invention, arrangement, and style for he writing of college essays. Narration, description, literary analysis, and research are the main essay forms covered. Discussion of model essays, practice in building college level vocabulary and grammar skills, and in-depth instruction about MLA style will also be a part of this class. A five-page research paper is required.
ENG 122 English Composition II (3) Fall/Spring
(A grade of “B” or better must be earned by Teacher Ed students, A minimum grade of “C” in ENG 121 or its equivalent or instructor permission)
A course designed to teach the basic Strategies of invention, arrangement, and style for the writing of persuasive college essays. Topics covered include logical fallacies, techniques of argumentation, quality thesis statements, effective quoting, and strategies for doing research. Some attention also may be given to grammar, vocabulary, and issues of style. An 8-10 page research paper is required.
ENG 201 Honors English Composition (3)
Prerequisites: Verbal SAT of 550 or higher or appropriate placement scores, student interest, and instructor permission.
This course replaces both ENG 121 and ENG 122. A course designed to challenge students who already possess strong writing skills. Content is similar to ENG 122 with the emphasis on persuasive writing. Students may engage in simplified debates in addition to writing papers. Independent research skills and familiarity with MLA style are required.
ENG 301 Rhetoric (3)
Prerequisites: ENG 122 or ENG 201
A study of classical and modern rhetorical techniques. Students will examine classic speeches by authors such as Cicero, Lincoln, and M.L. King, Jr.) and literary essays (by authors such as Eliot, Arnold, Orwell, Lewis, Chesterton, and Whitehead) in order to understand and imitate effective techniques of persuasive speech before writing their own essays and speeches.
