CNS 321 Survey and Philosophy of Counseling (3) fall
Prerequisite: PSY 211
A course designed to introduce the student to the field of counseling in a survey fashion. A definition of counseling, counseling theory and practice, the counselor’s relationship to the counselee, and various counseling skills will be considered. A major emphasis will be placed on the student developing a personal philosophy of counseling.
CNS 322 Needs Assessment in Counseling (3) spring
Prerequisite: CNS 321
A course that develops a biblical understanding of human constitution, fundamental human need, and strategies for assessing and meeting individual needs. A wide range of common human problems will be considered.
CNS 332 Introduction to Guidance Counseling (3) spring
Prerequisite: CNS 321
A course designed to introduce students to a basic understanding of the specific needs related to guidance and counseling in a school setting. The role of the guidance counselor, working contexts, program ethics, approaches, practices, problems, and issues related to elementary and adolescent children will be explored through presentations and class discussions.
CNS 334 Multicultural Counseling Techniques (3) spring
Prerequisite: CNS 321
A course designed to provide students with a basic understanding of cultural differences and societal forces that influence counseling. Specific needs and characteristics will be explored to help students develop interventions for adjusting counseling methodologies to people of different cultures.
CNS 391 Counseling Practicum (3)
Prerequisite: CNS 321
A practical course designed to give the student exposure to on sight counseling related experiences. The course includes meaningful observations combined with field exposure deemed appropriate given the student's limited background, training, and experience. The student will develop a personal diary that documents his or her reflections concerning things encountered on sight.
CNS 421 Counseling Techniques (3) fall
Prerequisite: CNS 321
A course enabling the student to develop a personal counseling style using triad role-play. Specific techniques for problem exploration, goal-setting, and action are discussed and practiced.
CNS 422 Group Process and Dynamics (3) spring
Prerequisite: CNS 321
A study of the psychosocial nature of groups with a special emphasis on group process and group facilitator functions.
CNS 434 Ethical Practice and Legal Issues in Counseling (1) spring
Prerequisite: CNS 321
A foundational course designed to provide the student with a basic understanding of marriage and family issues from a Christian perspective. A biblical theology of singleness, marriage, divorce, remarriage, human sexuality, and family will be some of the topics considered. Practical suggestions for basic interventions will also be examined.
CNS 442 Marriage and Family Issues (3) spring
Prerequisite: CNS 321
A course that acquaints students with a variety of issues that will help ensure their counseling ministries will operate within professional boundaries. The primary goal is to enable students to learn to manage the legal risks associated with providing counseling in church, parachurch, and professional settings.
CNS 491 Counseling Internship (3) fall/spring
Prerequisite: CNS 322, CNS 421, professor’s approval
A field experience where the student spends a minimumof 90 hours under supervision in an actual people-helping role or environment. Additional time is spent reading and discussing various Christian counseling approaches.
