Church Ministry Courses
CHM 211 Educational Ministry of the Church (3) Fall
An overview of Christian education theory and practice, primarily as it relates to the local church. Opportunities are provided for students to evaluate and design Christian curriculum and to interact with issues related to Christian education. Emphasis is placed upon various educational ministries in the local church. Students are encouraged to begin formulating their own biblically based philosophy of education.
CHM 212 Principles of Teaching (3) Spring
A course designed to introduce students to a biblical foundation of pedagogical and andragogical instruction. Attention is given to the teaching-learning process, and opportunity is provided for the student to research and critique key principles and methods related to creative teaching. Knowledge of the course is demonstrated by practical work in lesson-plan development and class presentations geared toward the age group of the student’s interest.
CHM 222 Music in the Local Church (3) Spring
This course is an introduction to the history and survey of music used in the church and will include a study of the variety of ways music is used in the church. This course will include an in-depth study of the history of congregational song and will introduce the student to various styles of music used in the Christian church today as well as introduce the student to various types of worship services in today’s community.
CHM 321 Children’s Ministry (3) Fall
Prerequisite: CHM 211
A course designed to equip students to prepare Bible lessons and to evangelize children within various educational contexts. The organization and implementation of open-air and neighborhood outreach ministries is emphasized. Attention is given to the lostness of the child without Christ and the biblical basis for child evangelism. Practical training, or learning by doing, is a feature of the course.
CHM 322 Christian Writing and Publishing (3)
A hands-on introduction to writing from a Christian perspective. Students will be exposed to a variety of literary forms for their critique and will be given opportunity to write a gospel tract and Christian article. Methods and means for getting their writing into print will also be introduced.
CHM 411 Leadership and Administration (3) Spring
Prerequisite: CHM 211
A course designed to help the student understand and implement biblical and contemporary management principles for effective Christian leadership and administration. Students are challenged to evaluate their own leadership potential by identifying personal strengths and weaknesses. Interpersonal dynamics inherent to leadership, such as communication, conflict management, problem solving, delegation, and motivating are discussed.
CHM 421 Adult and Family Ministry (3) Spring
Prerequisite: CHM 211
A consideration of adult psychology through the stages of adult life, with particular emphasis on developmental tasks, needs, and behavior. The development of faith in the adult life and the role of the local church in structuring needs-oriented ministries to adults and families are discussed. Students are challenged to look with introspection at their own lives as adults, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of local church ministries to adults and families.
CHM 431 Independent Study in Church Ministry (3) Fall/Spring
Students are provided the opportunity to begin an in-depth investigation of a specific topic (subject to the approval of the department chair) related to Church Ministry. Emphasis is placed upon reviewing the literature in the student’s chosen area of investigation.
CHM 422 Educational Research (3) Spring
Intended to be the “capstone” for the Church Ministries program, this course emphasizes research procedure and practice. Students are expected to integrate the various concepts from previous course work into a research study, the results of which are presented in both oral and written form. Opportunities are provided for students to interact with the writings of those who are principal spokespersons in their chosen field of inquiry. This course must be taken during the last semester of the senior year.
CHM 491 Church Ministry Internship (3) Fall/Spring
Prerequisite: CHM 211
Supervised involvement in a specific church ministry either in or under the direction of a local church. Students must obtain approval from the department chair before beginning an internship. The emphasis for this experience will be on the relationship between the supervisor and the student and on the reflective learning that occurs. This requirement must be fulfilled before beginning the semester in which the student hopes to graduate.
