Missions Courses

MI 501 Introduction to Missions (1)
This course is designed to help the local church develop a global plan for world evangelization. Attention is given to foundational biblical principles that will drive mission in the local church. The second half of the course gives attention to the key principles of personalization that will mobilize the entire church to do the missions task.

MI 602 Contemporary Issues in Missions (2)
The crucial issues facing the church in its worldwide mission are investigated. Particular emphasis will be placed upon such topics as Ecumenism, Separatism, the Charismatic Movement, Liberation Theology, the Power Encounter Movement, and the Church Growth Movement.

MI 603 Communicating Christ Interculturally (2)
A study of the principles of effective communication of the Gospel with a focus on the special problems involved in communicating the Gospel across cultural boundaries. The course will facilitate an understanding of different worldviews, thought patterns, value systems, verbal and nonverbal communications, social structures, and the decision-making process in differing cultural settings.

MI 604 Principles of Church-Planting and Development (2)
A study of the phases and facets of planting new churches both at home and overseas. Students will be exposed to church planting resources and consider strategic principles of ministry.

MI 606 Perspectives on the World Christian Movement (3)
Viewing history and the world through the biblical, historical, cultural, and strategic lenses, this course provides an analysis of the development, spread, and social impact of Christianity as a worldwide religious and social movement. Special attention is given to the role and impact of the church on cultures of two-thirds world countries and on traditionally non-Christian cultures. Through research and extensive reading, the student is equipped with the knowledge that will enable the student to promote a deeper commitment to the cause of home and foreign missions.

MI 607 Intercultural Relations in a Multiculural Society (2)
The course focuses on the multi-varied issues and concerns of effective intercultural relations in a multicultural society including: the process of assimilation in a culturally mixed society, how cultures blend to form a new dominant culture, how ethnocentrism can be both a positive and negative force, and types of stratification. Students will also examine the relationship between religion and society, formulating a vision for a multicultural ministry, and the biblical basis for the practices of a multicultural church.

MI 608 World Christianity and The Future Church (2)
A survey of current missions movements, directions in worldwide evangelism, the impact of globalization, along with an assessment of the trends in the worldwide evangelical church that will prepare a person for wise leadership during the coming decades.

MI 609 World Religions and Apologetics (3)
A study of the cultural background, historical development, main tenets, and worldviews of the major present-day non-Christian religions. Special emphasis is given to approaching various groups with the Gospel.

MI 610 History of Christian Missions (2)
An examination of the history of Christian missions and the reception of the Gospel among the peoples of the world from the Apostolic Age to the present time. Students will examine the development of God's mission to the nations through history with a view to the application of the insights which emerge to present-day strategies of missions and the student's own participation in what God is doing today.

MI 611 Perspectives on the World of Islam (3)
A course to educate students to understand and reach Muslim peoples with the gospel of Christ. Students then are encouraged to active involvement in outreach to Muslims through prayer, giving, going, and engagement of Muslims on a friendship basis.
